Cautiously Optimistic

So last week I finally fessed up to the fact that I’m in a bit of a running rut. Ever since I’ve been more determined than ever to bust out of it and come back better than ever. So far this week, I would say I’m cautiously optimistic. For my Monday workout I wanted to get in a solid 5 miles during my lunch break from work. It was blisteringly hot at 12:30 pm so I spent a few minutes before my workout planning a fun and challenging treadmill workout that was nothing short of AMAZING. I’ve never had 5 miles on a treadmill go by so quickly and I really felt like I was challenging myself (I was positively drenched in sweat at the end of this workout too). I broke everything down into either half or quarter mile increments, alternating between pushing myself with speed and ramping up the incline at my base speed.

While Monday’s run was awesome… it doesn’t hold a candle to Tuesday’s run. I finally got myself together to tackle the first item on my Summer To Do List, and Mike and I went trail running. We went out in the suburbs near Mike’s house and I was simply blown away. I told Mike I just wanted to take it easy and enjoy the run, but I ended up really pushing myself at certain parts. It was just too much fun! It had rained earlier that day so there were some big puddles to jump and plenty of mud but I didn’t mind at all. If anything, it just made it more fun! (Even though I did almost go down more than once. Mike has trail shoes… I do not.)

I only took a couple breaks to snap some pictures with my phone… how would I not? These views were breathtaking! The pictures don’t even do them justice. It was so quiet and peaceful too. A far cry from running in the city. Most days I’m so in love with my urban lifestyle but other days I can’t wait to shed the frantic pace of the city for a quieter existence.

The entire trail ended up being 4.5 miles (Mike wore his Garmin, I’ve not been running with mine at all). Also, are we not the geekiest runners of all time? Mike is wearing his “Team USA” singlet in honor of the Olympics and I’m wearing my “I ❤ 13.1” shirt (I couldn’t get a I ❤ 26.2 tshirt because while I’ve done it, I did not ❤ it haha) It was humid as all get out, hence why I am positively drenched post-run. I went to a restaurant after this to eat dinner and watch the Olympics too. Sorry I’m not sorry.

Check out all this mud I got on myself! I felt like a little kid after playing in mud puddles… I LOVED it. Trail running has to become a more common occurrence for me. In conclusion, I am cautiously optimistic about busting out of my running rut. Who knows, maybe this is the start of a new chapter 🙂
